Chemnitz model

  Falkeplatz       Mühlenstraße

One of the most important transport projects in Saxony is the Chemnitz model. The aim is to connect the centre of Chemnitz and the surrounding region quickly and without the need to change trains. Chemnitz offers good conditions for this project, as the city has a standard-gauge tram network, which enables connection to the regional railway network.

The project comprises a five-stage plan starting at stage 0, although the stages will not be implemented chronologically. In the Chemnitz urban area, this means further expansion of our tram network, which will be connected to the surrounding railway infrastructure at several interfaces through the Chemnitz Model.

The picture shows a Skoda tram and a city tram at the Roter Turm stop. In the background, you can see the red tower, the town hall and the tall hotel tower.

Chemnitz Model Stage 4

Since autumn 2020, the Central Saxony transport association, in German Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (VMS), the city of Chemnitz and CVAG have been jointly planning the first of a total of three inner-city sections for the new tram line towards Chemnitz Center. This is being built as part of the joint transport infrastructure project Chemnitz Model Stage 4 to Limbach-Oberfrohna.

Details on the construction project and construction progress can be found on the VMS website:
